Episode 4.5 – when things go bad…..

This is just an interim post. Think of it like one of those random Star Wars episodes they jam in where it doesn’t quite fit but they have a story to tell – we’ll get back to wrapping up our Spanish travels a bit later. But today has been a wonderful day (sarcasm intended) and it has just gone 10am. If only my wife would dress up as Princess Leia again – that may help. Well it wouldn’t hurt….

Anyway we needed a few things to go well for us today. We had two flights to catch to get from Granada to Rome (with a tight connection in Barcelona) then we had to pick up our leased car and drive to Tuscany. So tonight was meant to be falling asleep in the Tuscany countryside. Millie woke up chanting ‘we are going to Italy, we are going to Italy’. We were all very excited.

Instead, our first flight was delayed – not by a little but by 3hrs meaning we miss the connection by a mile. So I called the car leasing place to tell them we will be late. To which they informed me that their booking details say 11th May so they have no car for us (even though I have a confirmation stating 11th April).

As I sat here in the Granada airport trying to make calls to closed car leasing offices in Sydney and unhelpful Spanish airline hotlines I brush Olivia away as she tries to talk to me. She then stands in front of me and wets her pants – her only clothes for what is now looking like a very long day.

Then as I’m grabbing Olivia, Emelia bends down and wipes up the wee with her only jacket……

So what started as a day looking forward to some evening wine in Tuscany has now degraded to sitting endlessly in a Granada airport with two urine soaked kids with no transport to get to Tuscany when we do finally get to Rome.

And as my lovely wife just wandered off to buy a coffee as I type on my phone, with a smile she looks back and says ‘try not to let our children piss themselves while I am gone’……

And yet here are our kids, with no idea of the day they have ahead of them….

The joys of travel.
